Our Wealth Management Philosophy
Baker Avenue Asset Management (BAAM) is built on the premise that much of Wall Street has a herd mentality with very few firms thinking outside the box. At BAAM we have brought together skilled, talented and seasoned professionals who are all products of big investment banks but who have a strong intellectual curiosity and can think independent of common Wall Street philosophies.
For example, a common Wall Street philosophy has been to ‘buy and hold’ investments through all market conditions, a concept which assumes that the markets will be higher when the investor needs his or her money. Our question is "What happens when the markets are not higher, such as during the crash of 2000, 2001 & 2002 for example?" This “buy and hold” philosophy forced many investors out of retirement and back into the workplace.
At BAAM, our philosophy challenges this conventional thinking as we believe there are times to own US equities and there are times not to own US equities. Our Core All Cap portfolio attempts to exit down markets by having a very strong technical opinion on the market; when our market sentiment is negative, we move 100% into cash in an effort to protect principal.
Bottom line, if you don’t attempt to avoid down markets then the only certainly is that your investments will also go down; so why not try!
Our goal over the next few years is to continue to challenge each other and our thinking so that we may transform ourselves from being just another investment management firm to one that transforms lives.
